More Family Fun in Garden City
Last weekend saw the Letchworth Festival draw to a close. Two weeks of activities were rounded off with a successful Day of Dance, held on Saturday in Leys Square, and the Proms in the Park on the Sunday.
Braving Sunday’s heat wave were a traditional backswording display team, impressing the crowds with their skills, while live music filled a busy Broadway Gardens. With an impressive and fiery set of Hot Rods parked alongside there was plenty to see and do and it was a fitting end to a wonderful couple of weeks in our Garden City. A huge thank you to Dawn Ferguson and Roger Harrison for all their hard work towards the Festival.
There is still plenty to look forward to over the coming weeks, and this weekend there are at least three good reasons to visit Letchworth town centre.
Broadway Gardens becomes home to sheep, hens, and micro pigs as well as music, exhibits, a funfair, and food and drink as the Letchworth Arts Centre celebrates the utopian ideals that inspired the founders of the garden city movement at their annual summer event.
Who do you think you are Letchworth? is a two day celebration of arts and crafts, traditional dance and folk music, and talks and exhibitions tracing the roots of Letchworth’s ancestry. Take the opportunity to chat to visitors from some of the earliest examples of garden cities such as Bournville, Saltaire and Port Sunlight, and meet members of the Harlow Civic Society, whose new town grew out of the movement. Looking to the future there will also be information and demonstrations on green technology and an eco village. Get hands on with some traditional crafts, dress as a Letchworth pioneer, watch sheep being sheared, and hop on a horse drawn carriage.
The family friendly fun starts at 10am in Broadway Gardens with a packed live music programme also taking place in Leys Square on Saturday. Visit www.letchwortharts.org for full details of the weekend’s activities.
This Saturday also sees the launch of the Green House Community Market. This exciting venture developed and made a reality through the dedication of one woman sees the conversion of the derelict Gallery into a lively, community focused covered market. Sticking to the green principles of reuse and recycle the Green House aims to provide a sustainable solution to unwanted or unloved goods.
Come along and see if you can snap up a vintage treasure, or sample a delicious homemade cake at Saturday’s opening. With opportunities for auctions, vintage and produce markets, and a training centre visit their new website at www.letchworthgreenhouse.co.uk for more information.
Last but no means least, the regular craft market is open for business once again in Garden Square Shopping Centre this Saturday. With so much to see and do the town will be a great place to visit this weekend.
I’ll see you there.
