Is it really a decade since Morrisons first opened their Letchworth Garden City store?
The 70,000sq ft food superstore, Morrisons 97th store and one of the first located in the south of England, opened its doors on 5 July 1999.
Morrisons brought grocery shopping back to the town centre. It was the cornerstone of major investment and redevelopment in the town centre. Next door a new North Herts College building (now known as the Goldsmith Centre for Business) was created, Broadway Cinema benefited from a £2m refurbishment turning it into a multi-screen venue and The Spirella Building underwent a major regeneration turning it into the award-winning office building it is today.
10 years on, the Morrisons chain now boasts over 350 stores and has become one of Britain’s much loved brands. It’s fair to say you could probably name a couple of the celebrities used in Morrisons’ advertising or perhaps hum the theme song by certain pop group… Even in these challenging economic times Morrisons continues to perform well.
The Broadway store offers all the essentials for the ‘weekly shop’ as well as Morrisons’ unique ‘Market Street’, serving a complete range of quality fresh foods.
With over 500 on-site parking spaces and a location adjacent to the town centre, its easy to combine your grocery shopping with a good look round the town’s many varied shops.
Thank you for your 10 years service to the Letchworth Garden City community, here’s to the next decade and beyond.
